A 4X more about diplomacy, and the social/political costs of war instead about combat. Babylon 5 is a space opera something could be drawn from. What innovative 4X game mechanics would you draw from something like Dune or Star Wars? I'm not going to say Star Trek because that was clearly the inspirational source for the basic 4X elements from MOO that we all now take for granted. Most popular sci-fi literature seems to revolve around space opera, not empire building, which makes it hard to re-imagine within a 4X framework. Given the wealth of literature to draw inspiration from, you'd think there'd be more experimental and interesting space games. Varying modes of travel seemed innovative.

Originally posted by RayFowler:Starlanes were innovative. So any time you come up with something cool for the player to do you have to ask if it's a viable thing for the player to have done to him.įor example, it sounds cool if your spies can assassinate an enemy leader, but no one wants their game to end unexpectedly with a notice that they've been assassinated.

One of the big limitations of 4X games is the perception of a level playing field between the player and the AI. To show I'm trying I'll throw out an idea, how about a space 4x with a time travel mechanism? Ala the time class in Tales of Maj Eyal 4 where time travel is done via the game making saves that the game can refer back to. I'd argue because 4x is defined less by the four x's and more by the traditional mechanics of 4x, particularly with how space and space travel is visualised by the average player, we're stuck with core mechanics in space 4x that barely change. Make sure your load order is correct as well. Make sure that you follow the Unofficial Code Patch install instructions carefully as it's not installed like other mods. You can download the latest version here. Nexus users please note that DSMP is out of date on the Nexus page. Ok, so we (Wargaming) finally unveiled our take on Master of Orion:
